33. 36 hour bus journey!! (Denver to Michigan), America

Hi everyone and welcome to the Michigan blog post. Before I even start telling you our adventures in Michigan though, we had to endure a 36 hour bus journey in order to get there! This in itself is a blog post so here we go :) Enjoy!!!

The Bus Trip (Denver to Michigan)

After a very sad goodbye to our Fiji family it was time to hit the road! We were on our way to Michigan from Denver and that means only one thing. A hell of a distance, 1519 miles to be precise!

Our tickets were all booked and we were travelling by our favourite (hmm hmm cheapest) means of transport....Greyhound!!

This would be, by far, our longest bus journey yet!! A whole 36 hours, we weren't really looking forward to it but the only way to get it finished was to start it and hopefully go to sleep! This would at least eat away at some of the many hours we had to endure on this very overly air conned vehicle :)

As Rach explained at the end of her last blog (Boulder, Denver) we managed to arrive at the Greyhound station without meeting too many strange character!

Once we arrived in we made sure we stretched our legs and stood up as much as we could. We didn't really want to sit down due to us thinking 36 hours of sitting would be enough!!

Once the bus came we quickly got in our line. There is ALWAYS a mad panic when we are getting on the bus. The thing that really annoys us is people forming a queue with their luggage! How is that fair?! It's like people going down to the pool early in the morning and 'reserving' the sunbed!

Once we got back on the bus we managed to sit in the last available two double seats.  It was near the toilet which wasn't too nice but hey ho at least we were together!!

Even though we were near the toilet we still managed to nod off which was great news!!

We stopped off at St Louis and we were hungry. We had our supplies which was brilliant. It meant we didn't need to get food when we were at rest stops. We just had to reach above us and we could have whatever we wanted...most of which was cereal bars!

On this stop in Kansas, we had all get off the bus and wait 30 minutes. We were told we would hear an announcement on the tannoy when we had to get back on the bus. We were prior boarders before the new people getting on at this stop so at least we could sit where we sat before.

During the bus journey a guy had spilt his drink on the floor causing our bags to become sticky.  You'd think manners and courtesy would mean they would tell you if this happened so you could move your bag off the floor but no, not this time! We got off the bus and made our way to the restroom (going American now!) and we took it in turns to clean up our bags.

Whilst we were waiting to get back on Rach made a wrap. A wrap made from the available ingredients to us...BBQ sauce...seen as we didn't have anything else to put in it! Terrible! It's very tasty BBQ sauce though! :)

Once I came out of the restroom, I noticed that a lot of people had left the bus waiting area. Rach spotted two couples that were still around and I said well maybe their not getting back on the bus. We walked over to our bus outside and noticed that yes we had all got back on. The driver asked us what we were doing just before he let on the new people. We said we didn't hear the announcement and he wasn't happy!
He had to turn away two new people due to us having priority and getting back on the bus.
When we got back on the bus we noticed that people were asking where we had been. We were saying how we didn't hear any announcements! It turned out that two people were sat in our previous seats. This was annoying but on a greyhound bus a thing to do in that situation is let it slide. You definitely don't want to start anything especially if you are spending over a day with the other people.
Rach and I ended up sat behind each other and all we wanted to do was sleep but it wasn't too bad! We were just lucky to get on the bus really, even though it definitely wasn't our fault!!

At the next stop the guy next to me got off, meaning that Rach could sit next to me. I then was able to witness Rach create a very strange wrap concoction.

Rach decided to have a wrap made from BBQ sauce again, but add in a cereal bar! I didn't really want to try that! She said the result and taste was definitely different! I bet!

Sat together at last! :)

We were late arriving in St. Louis so we didn't end up having an hour stop over there. Rach and I were planning on, in the break, walking to the arch but obviously that couldn't happen now. We weren't too gutted though due to still being able to see it from the bus.

It was massive. Such a shame not to stand next to it but at least we have another reason to come back! :)

The bad news about our journey was the layover at Indianapolis. We arrived at 12am and had to wait for our next bus which was due to arrive at 5am. All we wanted to do was sleep!!

We walked around the station, it was so nice to strech our legs! We couldn't believe the time. Such a long time to wait!

There was a glimmer of hope due to an earlier bus leaving for Ann Arbor at 3am. I enquired whether we could change our tickets but strangely enough that would arrive later than when we were scheduled to arrive!! So we didn't bother.

We made ourselves comfy due to a long night ahead of us!! We completed some diary entries and took turns in having some shut eye.

We were soooo happy to get on our last bus!! We were nearly there!! The end was in sight!

We had a few more hours sleep. All we have done on this journey is sleep!! We sat together too which was lovely. We sat back and enjoyed the scenery. Not that I got too many pictures, it was just lovely to sit there and take in what was going by outside the window...and Rach having another weird wrap!

We pulled up and arrived at Ann Arbor!! Wow what a journey!!!

We both agreed that we didn't want to do that again in a hurry!! Wow it felt great that it was over!

Now on to Michigan adventures.

I've decided to do Michigan as a new blog post due to this part being longer than expected. We did a lot of things in Michigan so it definitely needs cutting into two posts!!!

Hope you've enjoyed this and we would love to read any comments you have! :)

Lots of love Nat xx
